Introducing a collection of writings by Viktoriia Kantseva, a Ukrainian mother and immigrant residing in Cavan. As a certified psychologist and a content creator, she has garnered a following of more than 23,000 on TikTok.

Having spent a significant period in Ireland, I began to observe subtle distinctions in daily life that hadn’t crossed my mind prior to relocating. A notable example was the perspective locals hold regarding appearance. This realization hit me during my daughter's inaugural day at school.

In Ukraine, the first of September is a very special day. The first day of school feels almost like a celebration. Children wear their best clothes, girls often have beautiful white bows in their hair, parents bring flowers for teachers, photographs are taken, and there is usually a small ceremony.

When our daughter began Junior Infants in Ireland, we instinctively geared up for a memorable event. The evening prior, we picked out her best outfit, ensured everything was in order, and approached the school with anticipation for this significant milestone. However, upon our arrival, it became clear that our expectations for the day were quite different from reality.

Parents lingered outside, engaged in casual conversations. The kids, dressed in cozy outfits, toted backpacks that seemed nearly oversized for their small frames. There were no formal speeches, no floral arrangements, and no elaborate ceremonies. Teachers greeted the students, they formed a line, and moments later, they all entered the building. And just like that, it was over.

Our daughter looked like she was ready for a professional school photoshoot. For a moment, I felt a little embarrassed. We had clearly put more effort into our appearance than was expected for an ordinary school morning. But then I looked around and noticed something important. Nobody seemed interested in how anyone else looked. There was no competition, no silent comparison between parents. Everyone's attention was on their children. That moment stayed with me.

As I spend more time in Ireland, I increasingly observe a prevalent mindset. Individuals here appear to prioritize practicality over aesthetics in their daily choices. Whether it's opting for leggings and a hoodie or selecting cozy footwear, personal comfort takes precedence. Makeup and elaborate hairstyles are often set aside, and the community embraces this laid-back approach without judgment.

Having roots in Ukraine, this experience felt distinctly unique. Ukrainian culture places a significant emphasis on maintaining a polished appearance. Many individuals take pleasure in dressing elegantly and prioritizing their looks. I was no exception; I had mastered the art of makeup application, selecting outfits, and ensuring that every detail was coordinated and refined.

However, there were moments when it wasn't solely about individual preferences. It also involved the weight of societal expectations. The desire to avoid the perception of not trying hard enough loomed large. You didn't want to appear negligent or believe you were falling short of some unspoken benchmark. Ironically, beneath it all, I wasn't truly that kind of person.

I have a fondness for aesthetically pleasing items and occasionally relish the opportunity to dress up. However, I've never been one to sacrifice comfort for the sake of style. There were moments in Ukraine when I opted for outfits that appeared suitable rather than ones that felt comfortable. This is one of the aspects I truly value about living in Ireland.

In this environment, the expectation to seek validation from others appears significantly diminished. Individuals are free to express their true selves. However, an intriguing contrast arises on Friday and Saturday nights. Strolling through an Irish town during these evenings reveals a striking transformation. Glamorous dresses, stylish high heels, polished shirts, and elegantly dressed individuals flock together, ready to enjoy a night out with friends.

Recently, I was sitting in my car on Main Street, taking a quiet moment before going home. I had forgotten what day it was, and then suddenly the street came alive. Groups of people appeared everywhere, laughing, talking and enjoying the evening.

What caught my attention wasn’t just the formal attire everyone wore. It was the ease and comfort they exuded. They weren’t putting on their finest clothes because life required it; rather, they were dressing up to embrace a night out, to celebrate, and to revel in the moment. I believe that distinction is significant.

During everyday life, Ireland seems to give people permission to be comfortable. To leave the house without worrying too much about how they are perceived. To choose comfort without having to explain themselves. These days, I still enjoy dressing up. I still smile when I see the town come alive on a Friday evening with dresses, heels and laughter. But now it feels like a choice.

Amidst my daughter's overly formal first day at school and the nights spent observing individuals making their way to town, I came to a profound realization. I no longer sought validation through my wardrobe choices; instead, I began to express myself through the way I dressed.
