"Listen closely... the birds are starting to sing," Danylo, a Ukrainian friend I'd met at a previous WordCamp, remarked as we neared the conclusion of the WCEU afterparty in Krakow. "It’s time for us to head out." He began to chant, "Hei! Hei! Hei, sokoly! Omynaite hory, lisy, doly." I couldn't help but join in. Beside us, the Polish guys chimed in with their own tune, "Dzwoń, dzwoń, dzwoń dzwoneczku, Mój stepowy skowroneczku." Soon, others behind us added their voices to our impromptu chorus. We were serenaded by "Hey Sokoly," a beloved folk song that blended Ukrainian and Polish traditions, as we exited Bastion III, a 19th-century Austrian fortress on the edge of Krakow's Old Town, watching the night gracefully transition into dawn.
To clarify how I found myself in that situation, I must first return to the origins of the story.

My journey began in Mykolaiv, a city renowned for its shipbuilding heritage and a reputation for beautiful brides, where I spent my formative years. After completing studies at two universities simultaneously, I entered a gap year in search of employment. My aim was to secure a job that would help fund my further education while I prepared for entrance exams to a university in Finland. Opportunities for graduates in Mykolaiv were limited, especially without strong connections, but I found a position at an IT company. Back in 2011, the concept of "IT" was still unfamiliar to me, yet my background in English made me a suitable candidate. The job itself was not overly challenging; I was tasked with assuming the identity of "Bob" from the U.S., assisting customers with their physical product purchases by tracking orders and guiding them through setup processes. Unfortunately, after a month and a half, I was let go. Whether it was due to my performance or personal preferences of others, it doesn’t really matter now—it’s all in the past.
The first job I'd gotten entirely on my own, the first paycheck that proved I could be independent, and the first time being fired -- all of it hit me at once. The last part was devastating, made worse by comments like "it was too good to be true," "we told you they'd trick you," and "look at so-and-so, doing such-and-such and earning properly." It was hard to sit with feeling like a failure. But somewhere in that difficulty, I got tougher -- and more determined to prove everyone wrong.

This role contrasted sharply with my previous experiences. I worked six nights a week, and Sundays felt particularly surreal—my designated day off—but my body had adapted to the night shifts and didn’t quite know how to relax. Despite this, I didn’t mind much. The thrill of building websites and achieving the perfect look was incredibly captivating. I tended to overextend myself, constantly learning and bombarding developers with inquiries, all in pursuit of deeper understanding. As I stood amidst that sea of people, I realized I wanted to contribute, not just observe. Then, the pandemic struck.

The WordCamp Europe events in 2020 and 2021 were held virtually, and I couldn't shake the feeling that they were missing the essence of what makes these gatherings special—thousands of individuals coming together, sharing energy and inspiration. So, when Porto was announced as the host city for 2022, I eagerly began preparing for the journey. This time, I chose to participate as a volunteer, eager to experience WordCamp from behind the scenes. It proved to be a pivotal decision. The atmosphere was especially poignant for Ukrainians, as the full-scale invasion had entered its second year, and everyone was navigating their own paths through the turmoil. For me, this event became a wellspring of resilience. I forged connections within the Ukrainian community, engaged in meaningful discussions with speakers, and left feeling as though I had truly grasped the spirit of WCEU.
That trip also clarified something I'd been circling around for a while. I've always loved traveling, but there was a barrier that had nothing to do with visas or money -- though those were factors too. It was a justification problem. Coming from a culture where time should be spent purposefully, traveling for its own sake felt hard to defend. A work conference, though? Completely justifiable. Nobody asks how much fun you had. I've been to Germany, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, and Poland this way. Spain is next.
Participating in WordCamps is one experience, while organizing a comparable event presents an entirely different challenge.

WordCamp Europe has emerged as one of the rare opportunities for us to gather face-to-face: to exchange experiences from the past year, to connect with individuals we had previously only interacted with online, and to witness the community's resilience and growth in spite of the challenges. While some were unable to attend in Krakow, and others may find it difficult to participate in such events in the future, for those of us who were present, the atmosphere felt especially poignant.

Для мене цей захід став джерелом натхнення. Я зміг ближче познайомитися з українською спільнотою, активно обговорював теми зі спікерами та повернувся з відчуттям, що нарешті зрозумів, навіщо потрібен WordCamp.
Ця подорож стала для мене важливим відкриттям, яке я давно намагався зрозуміти. Я завжди мав пристрасть до мандрів, проте існував певний бар'єр, що не був пов'язаний ані з візами, ані з фінансами, хоча ці фактори також відігравали свою роль. Основна проблема полягала в тому, як виправдати саму ідею подорожі. Я виріс у культурі, де час вважається ресурсом, і тому подорожувати просто заради задоволення здавалося чимось складним для пояснення. Але коли йдеться про робочу конференцію, ситуація зовсім інша. Це абсолютно прийнятна причина. Ніхто не запитує, скільки радості ти отримав під час заходу. Саме так я відвідав Німеччину, Португалію, Італію, Швейцарію та Польщу. Тепер моя наступна мета – Іспанія.

Як організатор, ти все одно пропускаєш більшість виступів, адже тебе одночасно тягнуть у десять різних боків. Але справжнє життя вирує в коридорах і на вечірках після завершення основних сесій.
Особливо важливо це для української спільноти. Війна розкидала нас по всій Європі -- різні країни, різні компанії, різні життя. WordCamp Europe став одним із небагатьох місць, де ми можемо знову зустрітися наживо: поділитися тим, що приніс цей рік, побачитися з людьми, яких досі знали лише онлайн, і переконатися, що наша спільнота продовжує зростати попри все. Багато хто не зміг приїхати до Кракова, на жаль дехто вже ніколи не зможе побувати на цих заходах. Для тих із нас, кому це вдалося, ці зустрічі мають особливе значення.
Саме про це ми з Данилом співали на світанку біля Bastion III, хоча ніхто з нас не сказав цього вголос. Сподіваюся, колись мені ще доведеться робити це на афтепаті в Хельсінкі та Києві -- щойно це знову стане можливим.
